Yesterday, I finally had a chance to watch a video that Brad Feld posted on his blog of an amazing TEDxHouston talk by Brené Brown. Brown talks about the necessity of vulnerability in forming human connection. She starts her journey in an attempt to dissect what makes people feel connected, and after thousands of interviews, she discovers the following:
There was only one variable that separated the people who have a strong sense of love and belonging, and [the people who] really struggle for it, and that was that the people who have a strong sense of love and belonging believe they’re worthy of love and belonging. That’s it.
She digs deeper in an attempt to understand the common thread among those who have that sense of “worthiness”, and what she finds is that “they fully embraced vulnerability”.
I highly recommend taking the 20 minutes to watch the whole talk – you won’t be disappointed.
As she says so eloquently in her closing remarks, “I’m just so grateful, because to feel this vulnerable means I’m alive”.
